SPRINTERS STAKES
The first G1 race of the autumn campaign has the most versatile horse in the most disadvantageous gate of the racing day. However, having the bulk of the contenders includng the favorite all breaking from the outside somewhat mutes the handicap .

AN ACE IN THE HOLE COME DERBY DAY
Betting 3 yr olds is an always a changing, synergy process. Much like the popular " Reality Shows" of the day, American Idol, You Got Talent, etc we find our favorites, eliminate the sub par, in essence, becoming the ultimate judge where our eventual prognosis accumulates in the Derby.
Going back and analyzing my selections of this years crop and prep races, I found that I didn't really get an "early feel" for any of the contenders come this Sunday.
Of the 18 Derby entrants, only 6 were selected as my top pick in any of their given races. They were: Alfredo, Spielberg, Historical, Deep Brillante, Just a Way, and Trip.
Alfredo: Had a big win with him back in December in the Futurity. I never imagined him as a Derby horse mainly because the winners of this race seem to peak too early.
Trip: This was my Derby selection from the get-go. Already there is a certain sense of satisfaction in that he actually found himself in the big race, unlike last years choice Target Machine, who never panned out. The Yayoi was a good race for him but not so much for me, as I failed to collect ,thanks in large part of my over estimate of Adams Peak and Fenomeno.( but I'm back on Fenomeno's bandwagon) :)
Deep Brillante: My top pick in two races. I like his determination. Putting him in trifecta formations with the contenders is going against conventional handicapping wisdom however. A fast pace usually spells the doom for such stalkers and aids the stretch runners, while a slow pace could be ideal for Deep and create huge hurdles for the late comers. Interesting enough, I don't see the outcome being much different either way. Brillante seems capable of holding a fast pace and the stretch runners, Gold & Co have the explosiveness to withstand even a snails pace.
Spielberg Bet the horse when he made that huge class drop to the 8th race. The track did him in that day but very consistent.
Historical: Owner Kondo was going through an dry spell .but I thought this horse could get him out of the rut. He did and I think there is a tremendous potential upswing for this horse.
Just A Way. Looks like a miler but his long stride and his penchant of taking time to get revved up seems to me to be ideal for this distance. This is my highest priced horse I will be using in my formations. 45-1 but worth a shot.
Now that every things been said and shredded I believe the talent of this race lies in the upper echelon of the odds board. Even though Ikee has had a few disappointments with older horses this year, his touch with the 3yr olds is indisputable, The firm surface being only programmatic with the forecast will be a huge boon to World Ace. Traffic always being a concern notwithstanding , I'm wagering on a runaway winner on the 27th.

#1 I'm Yours....The previous 1600 m G1 prep the Oka Sho is a tough race to gauge the worth of this 2400 m affair. However looking at the top finishers, all of them came off the pace well and after a month of training and a fast track the contenders look like they all could fire here again. The bloodlines of I'm Yours looks more convincing at this distance than the congestion of Deep Impacts sires, at this particular time anyways.

The turf should be running very similar to the Yayoi Sho, where Brillante ran a to a second place showing. The Satsuki is certainly loaded with more class horses than the Yayoi but Deep has been very consistent in holding his position down the stretch. The conditions make it difficult for handicapping for sure but will opt for the horse that proved he could weather the storm.

Spring House Cleaning
Tallying up the win/loss , profit/loss for the Spring. After three months we are showing a profit thanks in part to the good return in the February Stakes. Trainer Kazuya Nakatake 's good run early in January ,Katsuhiru Tanaka's Birthday card on Feb 25th, and Carnavolet's return on the straight Trifecta( March 10th ) round out the bigger wins thus far this campaign. Missed out on Trip in the Yayoi sho as a major wager, but the key horse did manage a 2nd place finish, but unfortunately to no profitable avail.

Yayoi Sho
Gold Ship, a horse not running in the Yayoi nevertheless sets an applicable barometer for the eventual winner. Coming out of the Radio Tampa Hai back in December, Gold ran to a two length victory in The Kyodo News Hai his following race. Now we have two more challengers coming out of the Tampa, race favorite Trip and the winner Adams Peak. Both looks to figure here! The race itself sets up nicely for a stretch runner as at least six horses can viably challenge for the lead. I'm gonna play them both and privately will make this my first Blue Ribbon ( a single wager of over ¥150,000) bet of the year.

Really nothing of note tomorrow. I'm going to play along the same lines as today and go with a Munakata/Tanaka combination. Today's 2nd race was a major " steam" horse for his regular jockey and with Take Yutaka's mount providing a perfect anchor for the birthday boy, it provided one hell of a trifecta present for the both of them. I most definitely should have pounced on it much more. A very rare opportunity and especially one that was so easy to spot.

Kisaragi Sho
Doing the math on this race ( yes, pun intended) I don't detect any particular speed advantage for Archimedes, but I'm loving the connections. Looking at the 3yr old classic race nominee list for Darley Farms and Sheik Mohammed, this horse is pretty much their last chance. Stablemate #1 Snowdon hasn't shown any type of potential dominance in a Graded race yet, so reiterating my point; connections factor big here. Also, a trainer( Fujiwara) without a classic horse thus far and a horse who came in 4th to Trip back in December, a horse which I feel will become one of the favorites going ahead further in the Spring meet.

Pelusa Gets A Soft Spot But Will Disappointment Still Reign ??
Truly , how far the mighty have fallen. To see Pelusa running knee deep in mediocrity in tomorrows main one has to ask " How did I get here? In Pelusas case, a disastrous turn in the Japan Cup, that had everyone scratching their collective heads. The Alima Kinen scratch I guess was more about saving face rather than health. There had to be a lot of discussion in the barn about the mindset of Pelusa, and with another potential dismal G1 showing in the most anticipated race of the year? it would have been utterly embarrassing.
The race itself tomorrow looks like a cakewalk for a horse even half as talented as Pelusa. The prior 52 races combine of the remaining 13 entrants has produced ONLY 3 winners. The average time of an Open Stakes race at 2000 meters in Fuchu is 1.59.5. Pelusa ran a 1.56.3 here back in October suggesting even at a slower time a probable 4 length victory is easily attainable over his nearest rivals.
However in summary: This is Pelusa we are talking about...Bettors Beware!!

January 8th
Today I have marked trainer Kazuya Nakatake as having a successful race day as his entries seem to be well below the odds radar, particularly the dangerous War Crown in the 10th. and Zenno Verano in the 11th. Great payouts on his horses if they can top my trifecta cards.

2011
As always I would like to say a big Thank You for those taking the time to read this blog , especially the All Star team* ( you know who you are*) that regularly comments and gives invaluable insight into a very challenging venue that is Japanese Keiba.
Unfortunately I had my first losing season here in 011. There were no signature big wins for most part of the calender year, but managed to cut down the loss amount by a few decent returns late in the game.
Surveying the results, it was easy to see where I chased after too many horses ( Target Machine& Absolute) that never came through for me. Also I've noticed too many races had tickets construed to limit the amount of losses ( wide tickets, insurance tickets) rather than to optimize a win.
I didn't work with the parameters of the blogs bankroll in many instances, instead letting emotions take over in making sporadic jumps of ticket amounts. ( Pelusa in the Japan Cup lol) for example.

2012 Strategies
The bigger wins that occurred here mostly came off of Trifecta tickets. Smile Jack, Narita Cyrstal, Alfredo, to name a few. This will probably be the most notable change this coming year as I will stress a volume of more races to bet but with a more limited bankroll with single tickets being predominantly no more than ¥1000 and with emphasis on higher payouts, mainly made up of Trifecta tickets.
I will post wagers for earlier races this year something that I didn't do last year. * I try to keep the reader in mind as it isn't always possible to bet an early race if one so desires. If the readers would like to make an early selection wager just give me an email or comment and I can gladly put it on for you.
I stopped the " charity races" shortly after the earthquake ( which was kind of stupid if you think about it). They were actually showing a profit. I'll consider re-starting them.
I'll most definitely get a " Pick 5 " pool initiated soon.

Personal Results:
I had two returns of over ¥900,000 last year. The single biggest loss on one race was a little over ¥200,000. My website ( which is down temporarily now) reached a peak of 19 " Paid Customers" and generated close to ¥700,000 profit ending 011. As of December 31st my result including my service generated income was a profit of ¥1,250,000. I'm certainly not rolling in it but for a serious pastime that I enjoy I'm quite pleased with that* but could always use more :)
2011 Results:
Races Wagered: 93
Races Won: 25
Total Wagered Amount: ¥1,512,00
Total Amount Returned: ¥1,305,00
2011 Amount Loss: ¥207,000
Overall Bankroll Standings: + ¥644,000
