Paris Anyone?

Pack your bags and withdraw some money because all indications are pointing to Vista heading for France come October. I wrote here last year (March 10th) that Vista will be the next super star in the racing world. She will be able to cement that fact with a win in the Arc De Triomphe...Of-course for better odds, a trip to England in August for " early pricing " might be in the cards.

* The Tokyo track is favoring late stretch time, particular on dirt. Horses that had the fastest stretch time in their previous start won in 12/24 races over the weekend

* We got a nice return on our ￥5000 11-2 ticket yesterday. ( ￥140,000)

* Hit your head on the wall moment: Attacking the Victoria Mile for me was basically to bet against Red Desire..Saturday night I configured a" random trifecta box", keying #11 (vista) with 6 other horses for ￥2000 ( 21 tickets total..￥42,000)..other horses were 2,3,6,7,10,14...But on Sunday for what reason I'm stil not sure I decided to substitute the # 1 horse INSTEAD of 10!!! A costly decision of over ￥600,000. Agggg

There were a few reasons why I didn't want to put the two heavies ( Desire & Vista) on the same ticket( ridiculously low price) being the major, lingering fatigue questions, and yet another one mercifully appeared..Desire's disadvantageous gate draw. For a horse who is at her best when stalking the pace it might be a too heavy a load to haul!

VISTA vs DESIRE

THE SAGA CONTINUES.....

Buenna Vista will have a score to settle as she meets the horse that prohibited her from a Triple Crown legacy Red Desire, this Sunday in the Grade 1 Victoria Mile.
Both horses are coming into the race in fine form.Desire, off some success in Dubai,and Vista, with some Dubai momentum as well and a victory over last years Alima Kinen winner Dream Journey, earlier this year....stay tuned

Pelusa ran a 2:24.3 in the Aoba Sho on May 1st at the same distance as the Derby. On time alone, this would put him on par with Vodka( see above). It's difficult to match the same success as this effort but provided he races under the same circumstance on May 30th..who knows?

Weekend Recaps

My take on Japanese racing and particular this blog is on the gambling side. Having said that, lets put Danon Chantily(#13) record race in yesterdays NHK Mile Cup in a little more perspective. He did what all Fuji kiseki sires do, and that is to run well between 1200\1600 meters on turf. The time of 1.31.4 is impressive, but somewhat less so if you realize that just last week, Tiger Fang won an Allowance race at the same distance in 1.33.6. The track is running fast, particular in the late afternoon post times. The Mile Cup is now considered a prep for the Derby because of the recent success of Deep Sky. In reality its not. The past 5 years of the top 3 finishers in the Cup, the horses are 0 for 14 in the Derby. Another potential pitfall for potential Danon backers, is that horses BOUNCE when coming of record times. Do I consider Danon a serious contender for the Derby?..uhm..No!......Sumi trained Rulership(#5) was on form taking the Principal Stakes on Saturday. My speed figures on him are still marginal, but he has 3 weeks to sharpen up. He has the connections to do it needlessly to say. I still like Reve d ' Orient, who only managed a 3rd place showing in the Kyoto Shinbun Hai. I haven't determined the pace-line for the Derby yet, but given some luck this horse could be a trifecta buster!**************************************** I've got quite a few emails saying how my selections have been less than stellar lately...true the big races that everyone likes to bet( except me) have been disappointing,but where was the mail when I hit last weeks Airwolf ticket for ￥112,000 return on a ￥1000 wager.

Tokyo 11th Race...#15 GARBO
...34.2 stretch time (11/21) on the same course as today, followed up by an impressive 4th behind Rose Kingdom on 12/20 makes for an interesting 20-1 shot!
