Sekiya Kinen Preview

Spirytus, the 5 yr-old gelding will try to ride the momentum with Shibata this weekend in Niigata and cap a victory in a graded race, in what has been a very consistent campaign thus far this year. The decision to move up in class was undoubtedly made easier after his previous win in Tokyo, where he timed an impressive 33.1 stretch time . To give punters more reason to make him the probable favorite is his 8 for 10 board mark at the race distance of 1600 meters.........................................................................................................................................................

Odds & Ends

Horse coming off Graded races have won the last six.

The public has excelled at finding the favorite, as it has hit the board the last nine consecutive races.
******************************************************************************:
Spirytus is no Smile Jack, who won this race last year, but I see no underlying flaws that says he cant compete at this level. Like last week where a graded race was a requisite for winning, this seems to be the only knock against Spiry..abet a very light one.

If Spyritus brings his best legs to this race he could romp here but this is a horse that should've been running at the open level a long time ago. He's usually been in the money but he seems to turn in a lot of - for a horse of his calibre anyways - mediocre performances. But as it's another relatively weak summer field he should at least be a factor. I think the problem will be narrowing down the rest of the field...

Yeah for sure...I know Vega will be one of the contenders because of his 3rd place showing. He was getting 25-1 then though. Wont be even close to that at all..so already don't like him.I always like to throw in a few mid-price flyers but this might just play out to the favorites if the track holds to good weather.
